By the end of the year, a new antibody treatment should be available to protect immunocompromised individuals from covid. And it will do so against all virus variants, manufacturer Astra Zeneca says confidently in an interview.
Laboratory studies show that the antibody, called AZD3152, neutralizes all known variants of covid-19. Various regulatory agencies back AstraZeneca to make the treatment available this year.
Injected into muscle
The antibody cocktail is intended for people not responding to Covid-19 vaccines. The drug is injected into the muscle in one dose, intended to make it easy to administer.
The body is supposed to make antibodies with a vaccine; AZD3152 is administered externally.
Old antibody treatment
The company had already launched a treatment with the antibody AZD7442 (Evusheld) in 2022. The protective effect lasts for about up to twelve months.
For patients who have been symptomatic for seven days or less and do not require hospital treatment, the risk of becoming severely ill or dying is reduced by 50 percent, Astra Zeneca said.
